Have you heard of the Freddie The Frog series? In this picture book series, music educator and author Sharon Burch uses the adventures of a frog named Freddie to introduce music notation and rhythm to early elementary kids. The series is perfectly suited for classroom use, but I use it with private piano students and have found it to be quite useful and enjoyable for students. I was pleasantly surprised to meet Sharon Burch during the 2013 Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference. If you are looking for a fun way to introduce music notation to k-3 students, this is it! There are also supplemental games and coloring sheets at http://www.freddiethefrog.com
I’ll definitely check this out, thanks for letting us know!

I clicked Play with interest but to be honest, Dana, the music was – ironically – so grating I couldn’t watch the whole thing! Maybe just my crappy laptop speakers but there it is. For what it’s worth…
Nice to see another picture of you.

LOL – I had a similar thought when I watched the video! The books really are cute, though and they give kids a way other than Every Good Boy Does Fine to remember their notes. One thing I can say about you is you are going to call it like you see it. I love that!!!

Whew. Relieved. After I hit Post Comment I had second thoughts. Sometimes there’s a fine line between candour and just plain rudeness. I was afraid I had crossed that line.
Incidentally, I have found this to be helpful and inspiring for the whole blogging thing (for me – not implying in any way that you need it!): http://davidkanigan.com/2012/04/05/something-sacred-about/#comment-3805
