I don’t remember my first chord – but I have to say that my students who only have a keyboard at home sure struggle with it at the lesson on my acoustic piano. It gets frustrating. I feel a rant coming on … I better quit before I hijack your blog!
You are so right! This student has an acoustic piano at home and both parents play the piano. I have much older students who struggle with playing chords. Their fingers love to do the jelly dance. Of course, these are the students who play on electric keyboards at home. OMG I don’t mean to add fuel to your oncoming rant!
Ooooh – you and I might just be deadly together on the rant front!
I’m thinking of moving my keyboard down into my studio, now that it’s no longer needed as a 2nd piano for my own kids to practise. That way I would have that option for those few students whose parents still REFUSE – after promising – to buy a real piano.
Last week, for the first time, I got really brave and turned down a couple new students solely because they only have a keyboard. There are enough teachers who will teach them. I won’t anymore. I’m getting old and grumpy 🙂
I think moving your keyboard down into your studio is a great idea. The addition of a digital keyboard opens up some interesting possibilities for playing with rhythm and for duets.
